If you are running Ubuntu Breezy, the best way to install FUPlayer is to install the Debian/Ubuntu package that I have built. Download it above and save it in your home folder. Then open a terminal, and type the following and then enter:
You will be prompted for your password, after which the package will be installed. FUPlayer depends upon a few other packages that are not installed in Ubuntu by default. The above command will also install any additional packages FUPlayer needs, for which you will need to be connected to the Internet.
FUPlayer is launched from the GNOME menu, in Applications > Sound & Video > FUPlayer.
Currently, FUPlayer will not run on Ubuntu Dapper because Dapper lacks the Python bindings for libmusicbrainz. Nor will FUPlayer run on Debian Sarge. FUPlayer might run on Debian Testing or Unstable, but this has not been tested.
If using the Debian package is not an option, download the source code above and read the INSTALL file for instructions.
If you are running Ubuntu, you will need to install gstreamer0.8-mad or gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg from universe. gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg is faster and overall superior, but, unfortunately, a bug in the version in Breezy causes it wrongly to report the MP3 durations, which will affect meta-data reading (when you import your music) and playback. So if you are running Breezy, you should use gstreamer0.8-mad. For more information on why MP3's do not play out-of-the-box, see:
